The heating and cooling market has seen a lot of changes in the past few decades and even years. Mini-split AC systems are the latest to join an industry full of options such as smart thermostats, dual fuel systems, and many others. We’ll show you the best circumstances to use them below.

What is a Mini Split AC System?

Years ago, your only option to add custom heating and cooling to a dwelling was a window unit. Then came split air conditioners with both indoor and outdoor units. Then central cooling and heating came along. But the best HVAC option making noise right now is the mini-split system.

Traditional HVAC systems use a unit outside to cool air and distributes it via ductwork installed in the walls and ceilings. Mini-split systems do not use this conventional ductwork to supply cold air. The mini-split moves refrigerant through insulated lines, from the outdoors to your indoor units. Then it redirects the airflow into your different zones (if any).

Components to a mini split system generally include:

  • Compressor or condenser located outside the property.
  • Air handler located inside.
  • Power cable.
  • Condensate drain.
  • Coolant and/or refrigerant.
  • Suction tubing.

Mini-splits are mounted on walls and are more secure than window air conditioning units because they only require a small drilled hole into the wall to run the refrigerant lines. You don’t need to cut a hole in the wall or have a window open 365 days a year as with a mounted air conditioner. The cost is also comparable to a window unit. The end cost depends on the type of system and how many zones exist.

Installation calculations provided by Schaible’s is crucial. We’ll ensure the correct size for each indoor unit and evaluate the best location for the installation. Over-sized or incorrectly located air-handlers often result in short-cycling, which waste energy and does not provide accurate temperature and humidity control.

Mini-Split AC System Benefits

Many advantages come along with utilizing a mini-split AC system. One of the most prominent is improved cooling for your property. For better cooling in those areas, each air handler Positioned to affect specific rooms or zones. You may adjust the temperature of an area based on your preferences, such as time occupied, preferred sleep temperature, and much more. Conversely, you may switch off units located in rooms that have little to no occupancy. Another advantage is the elimination of ductwork. You may install mini-splits in locations such as new rooms, build on, he or she sheds, and anywhere else traditional ductwork installation would be difficult and costly. Mini-splits are also easier to install and come with similar warranties as conventional systems. Finally, they even require less maintenance than central air conditioners.

Mini-Split Heating System Benefits

Mini-split systems can also provide space heating when used with a heat pump feature. Many advantages come with this system, as well. In addition to those mentioned above, advanced customization on which rooms and zones you want to heat becomes an option. Mini-split heating systems also use no ductwork, are easy to install, offer warranties, and less maintenance. Much like mini-split AC systems, they also allow significantly lower heating bills. According to theDepartment of Energy, an ENERGY STAR certified ductless mini-split system can use 60% less energy than standard home systems. Those of us who live in regions with cold weather can picture the savings. A mini-split heating system can offset its own cost when factoring how much you would save throughout the years.

However, there are some downsides to these systems. In many cases, a homeowner must determine what type of heating system makes the most sense in terms of rooms count, the capacity needed to support those areas, and the BTU rating of the unit.

Lastly, though mini-splits incur lower heating costs overall, initial installation may be more expensive, which may put off some homeowners. Fortunately, incentives or rebates are available for those interested in ductless heating systems because they are more environmentally friendly.
